Group A - Germany and Switzerland

Group A - Germany and Switzerland

Scotland crashed out of Euro 2024 after finishing bottom of Group A after being beaten by Hungary in their final group game.

The German team qualified as the group leader, while the Swiss team advanced to the knockout rounds in second place.

Hungary can still advance to the round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams, but will need to wait for the remainder of the group stage to determine their fate.

Group B - Spain and Italy advance to the last 16, Croatia awaits

Group B - Spain and Italy advance to the last 16, Croatia awaits

The Spanish team has advanced to the round of 16 as group leader with one game left.

Italy finished second thanks to Mattia Zaccani’s injury-time equalizer against Croatia.

Until then, Croatia look set to advance, but they must hope they can emerge as one of the best third-placed teams – two points away and with a -3 goal difference – a slim hope.

They need England to beat Slovenia by three goals or more, Denmark to beat Serbia, Turkey to beat the Czech Republic and Portugal to beat Georgia.

Group C – England advances but awaits final placing

As one of the best four third-placed teams, England are guaranteed a place in the last 16 in the absolute worst case scenario.

Gareth Southgate’s side face Slovenia in their final group game on Tuesday, with a win ensuring the Three Lions advance as top of their group.

Denmark and Slovenia will automatically advance if they win. If Serbia beat Denmark and Slovenia don’t beat England, they will finish in the top two.

  • England v Slovenia (Tuesday, 20:00 BST)
  • Denmark v Serbia (Tuesday, 20:00 BST)

Group D - Tense first half

Group D - Tense first half

The top three teams in Group D are separated by just one point, with each potentially finishing first, second or third in the group stage.

But the Netherlands and France know they are guaranteed a place in the last 16 as they have four points and cannot finish lower than third.

They just need to avoid defeat to move into the top two.

If Austria beats the Netherlands, they will move into the top two. One point is at least enough to get into the top four and finish third.

Poland became the first team to be eliminated after France drew with the Netherlands on Friday.

  • Netherlands v Austria (Tuesday, 17:00 BST)
  • France v Poland (Tuesday, 17:00 BST)

Group E - three points for the whole team

Group E had the unusual situation of two games each with three points.

This is the first time in the history of the European Cup that all four teams have the same points after two games.

All four teams know a win on Wednesday will put them in the round of 16, but no team can secure first place with a win.

One point will be enough for Belgium, Romania and Slovakia – the latter two teams will play each other.

If both games end in a draw, Ukraine will still be out despite having four points, as they will finish bottom of the tournament on goal difference.

  • Ukraine v Belgium (Wednesday, 17:00 BST)
  • Slovakia v Romania (Wednesday, 17:00 BST)

Group F – Portugal qualified first in the group

Group F – Portugal qualified first in the group

The Portuguese team advanced to the round of 16 as the first in the group.

If Türkiye avoid losing to the Czech Republic, they will advance to the knockout rounds.

The Czech team must beat Türkiye and hope that Georgia cannot beat Portugal. If they do, it will come down to goal difference.

Georgia, making their Euro 2024 debut, face a tough task as they must beat Portugal and then hope the Czech Republic can advance by beating Turkey. In this case, it will come down to their goal difference compared to the Czech team.

  • Czech Republic v Türkiye (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)
  • Georgia v Portugal (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

What about the third-place team?

The four best third-place teams advance to the top 16, while the bottom two teams are eliminated.

At Euro 2016 and 2020, every team with four or three points and a negative goal difference advanced.

How are two teams with the same points in Euro 2024 divided?

  • Head-to-head results between teams
  • Head to head goal difference
  • Number of goals scored in head-to-head matches
  • Total goal difference
  • Total goals scored
  • Minimum disciplinary points (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, two yellow cards in one game = 3 points)
  • Qualifying Ranking
